New Season, New Look: Capitol Park’s Transformation Underway

Exciting changes are coming to Capitol Park!

We’re nearing the finish line on a series of upgrades that are transforming this beloved Downtown space. The reopening of the expanded dog park on June 2 marks the start of the completion of project elements. Next, on June 23, construction fencing will come down, marking a major milestone in the revitalization plans for the park.

While light construction will continue, Capitol Park will enter a phase where it will be semi-open to the public, offering visitors a preview of what’s to come.

Construction began in January as part of the Capitol Park Master Plan, designed to bring more natural beauty and welcoming green space to the heart of the city.

When fully re-opened, Capitol Park will feature vibrant new gardens, permeable surfaces, an expanded lawn, and a refreshed canopy of trees. All of these elements are part of a larger vision to soften the park and green the space for visitors and its growing residential community.

These upgrades are supported by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Revitalization and Placemaking (RAP) program, funded through the American Rescue Plan Act, which invested in Downtown areas and public spaces across the country that drive population and economic growth while addressing the lingering impacts of COVID-19.

As a historic gathering place between Woodward Avenue and Washington Boulevard, the Capitol Park community continues to evolve into a residential and bustling small business enclave. The park’s construction plans will also include upgraded electrical infrastructure, permanent seating, enhanced landscaping, lighting, and shaded areas.

This summer, parkgoers can enjoy the Summer in the Parks events in Capitol Park, including Community Yoga with Citizen Yoga, starting July 16 from 6 to 7 p.m. and every Wednesday and Sunday through Aug. 31.

Capitol Park is one of the 18 parks and public spaces managed by the DDP, which includes a total of eight parks, nine public spaces, and one monument.

Once fully complete, Capitol Park will be transformed into a lush, dynamic green space—the perfect place for residents, visitors, and furry friends to relax, connect, and enjoy all that Downtown Detroit has to offer.

Stay tuned for more updates.
