Downtown Detroit Event Road Closures

Detroit Tree Arrival | Wednesday, November 4

Tree Arrival closures are on Wednesday, November 4 from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Closure Locations:

  • Woodward Avenue at Campus Martius Park

  • Monroe Street and Woodward Avenue (at Campus Martius Park)

  • Farmer Street from Monroe Street to Bates Street

  • Cadillac Square and Woodward Avenue

Detroit Tree Lighting | Friday, November 20

Tree Lighting closures began Wednesday, November 18 at 6:00 a.m. Roads will reopen on Saturday, November 21 at 6:00 a.m.

Closure Locations:

  • Woodward between State and Congress (around Campus Martius Park)

  • Michigan between Woodward and Griswold

  • Fort between Woodward and Griswold

  • Cadillac Square between Woodward and Bates

  • Monroe between Woodward and Farmer

  • Woodward between Congress and Larned (only November 20)

Thanksgiving Day Parade | Thursday, November 26

    Full closure NB/SB Woodward between Grand Boulevard and Warren

  • Wed., Nov. 25 at 12:00 p.m. to Thur., Nov 26 at 4:00 p.m.
    Full closure NB/SB Woodward between Warren and Congress

  • Thur., Nov. 26 at 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
    Ramp closure NB/SB M-10 to W Jefferson (should remain closed this year with active adjacent Second Ave construction project)

  • Thur., Nov. 26 at 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
    Ramp closure SB M-10 to Larned (should remain closed this year with active adjacent Second Ave construction project)

  • Thur., Nov. 26 at 6:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
    Full closure EB/WB Fort between Tenth and Griswold

  • Cross streets at Woodward that remain open to East-to-West traffic only will be stop-sign controlled until full closure of the parade route at 5:00 a.m. Thursday

Downtown Detroit Road Projects

Michigan Avenue and Lafayette Blvd Construction

The City of Detroit has begun construction along Michigan Ave from Cass Ave to Woodward Ave and Lafayette Blvd from Shelby St to Griswold St. The project will include resurfacing of roadways, sidewalk and curb reconstruction, traffic signal upgrades, and new landscaping.

Water main relocation on M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) bridge over the Dequindre Cut 

  • Water main relocation is required prior to removing and replacing the M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) bridge over the Dequindre Cut.
  • Initial stage requires lane closures on the northbound and southbound Gratiot Connector between Russell and Orleans streets.   
  • Starting next month, lane closures will be in place on M-3 between the Gratiot Connector and St. Aubin Street.

I-75 (Northbound) Ramp to M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) Closed  

Weather permitting, crews will close northbound I-75 Exit 51B to M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) in Detroit for pavement repair. The closure begins on Friday, Oct. 2 at 7:00 p.m. and it will be opened by 5:00 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 5. 

  • The connector ramp is being closed in order to safely repair the ramp. 
  • The resurfacing is part of the ongoing utility relocation project needed prior to replacing the M-3 bridge over the Dequindre Cut.

Detailed bridge inspections on I-375 and I-75

Weather permitting, MDOT crews will start detailed bridge inspections during off-peak hours along I-375 in downtown Detroit on Monday, Aug. 24. Work will begin daily at 9 a.m. and end by 3 p.m. to avoid rush hour traffic. Impacts on I-375 traffic will include single-lane closures and intermittent ramp closures. Lane closures will be required on freeway overpasses during work hours. Work will not occur on days when the Detroit Tigers are hosting afternoon games at Comerica Park.  

Starting Monday, Aug. 31, work will include inspections on I-75 between Woodward and Mack avenues. Daily single-lane and intermittent ramp closures are scheduled between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. 

These inspections will help ensure continued safe and reliable operations of these structures. All work is expected to be completed prior to the Labor Day holiday weekend. Details on days and locations are available on Mi Drive.

People Mover Station Gets Upgrade

The Detroit People Mover Water Square Station is getting a significant refresh. According to officials, over the next six months, starting in September 2026, during planned, two-day shutdowns, crews will work on interior and exterior improvements to meet the station’s future needs and functionality as new projects come online that increase ridership. The Detroit Free Press Marathon brings hundreds together to experience something unique to Detroit — the only international marathon in North America where participates cross into Canada over the Ambassador Bridge at sunrise, then return to the United States through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.
