RAP Program Update:
The Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP) and the DDP Board of Directors are proud to announce the reopening of Capitol Park, located Downtown at the center of Shelby, Griswold and State Streets. The iconic park officially reopened during a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. In attendance at this exciting and highly anticipated renovation were our partners from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation/Downtown Development Authority, and members of the community, including local small businesses and residents.
Residents, businesses, and visitors can now enjoy a beautiful public space complete with additional greenery and landscaping, an upgrade from the former, mostly concrete park. This project is the result of a public-private partnership that builds on the community-led masterplan created in 2017.
After six month’s of construction, the fully renovated park now offers a revitalized public space complete with an expanded lawn, vibrant gardens, a new canopy of trees, innovative green infrastructure, updated lighting, and a refreshed dog park. Designed as an outdoor district living room, the reimagined park is now a greener, more walkable destination that supports residents, visitors, and surrounding businesses alike.
These exciting improvements were made possible through our partnership with the City of Detroit, and support from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Revitalization and Placemaking Program (RAP), funded by the American Rescue Plan Act. Additional funding came from the City of Detroit Downtown Development Authority, Knight Foundation, and Kresge Foundation. A special thanks to our funders for supporting this community gem.
