Growing up in the suburbs of Rochester Hills, I still remember the awe I felt the first time I stepped into the city—I knew instantly it was where I wanted to build my career. The public art adorning the sides of buildings, the striking Art Deco architecture, the roar of the People Mover, and the cheerful ding of the QLINE bell—it all created a vibrant energy unlike anywhere else. There’s truly no place like it, especially in the magic of the winter season.
From day one of starting work downtown in 2024, I’ve been immersed in the energy and excitement of the city, experiencing firsthand the pulse of its events and the dedication of the people who make them happen. Being part of such a dynamic team has allowed me to contribute to Detroit’s vibrancy in meaningful ways, from executing thousands of free, accessible programs for Detroiters and community members to continuing to create initiatives that highlight the city’s art, culture, and music.
These are just a few of my favorite spots to explore when you’re looking to beat the winter blues!
- The Cadillac Lodge & Downtown Detroit Markets: After November 12, Cadillac Square comes alive as a winter marketplace with curated Detroit vendors offering locally made gifts—everything from jewelry and home décor to toys, books, and snacks. I love popping down during the workday to browse and pick out holiday gifts for my friends and family! Once you’re done shopping, you can warm up in the Cadillac Lodge, a ski-lodge–inspired tent offering festive beverages, toasty treats, and a cozy, family-friendly atmosphere.
- The Rink at Campus Martius: Whenever my friends want to get together, one of my go-to suggestions is always ice skating at The Rink at Campus Martius Park! Opening to the public on November 22 this year, the Rink is the perfect spot to hang out, glide on the ice, and snap photos of Campus Martius’s iconic Christmas Tree, up every year through Martin Luther King Day.
- CHALET 313: Another great spot to warm up in the winter is CHALET 313, a fun, heated, double-decker attraction found in the south-end of Campus Martius Park. Opening November 22, following the 22nd Annual Tree Lighting, it will serve seasonal beverages and snacks—and I’ll be there for the Winter Trivia series on Thursdays in January and February from 6–8 PM. Grab your team if you’re up for a challenge—I know where I’ll be!
- Downtown Lighting Displays: Downtown Detroit will shine brighter than ever this holiday season with plenty of photo-worthy lighting displays throughout the city. Explore Campus Martius Park, Capitol Park, Cadillac Square, Beacon Park, Grand Circus Park, Paradise Valley Park & Plaza, Gratiot-Randolph Plaza, Jefferson Avenue, and Washington Boulevard—each transformed with its own unique holiday charm.
