Each year, the Downtown Detroit Business Improvement Zone (BIZ) recognizes one Ambassador whose work exemplifies the heart and mission of the work: excellence in leadership and a deep commitment to the community.
“Ambassador of the Year” not only reflects strong performance but also the ability to lead by example, uplift teammates, and consistently deliver on the BIZ’s mission to keep Downtown clean, safe, and welcoming for all.

In 2025, Derek Brown was named the BIZ Ambassador of the Year. Over the past 12 months, he has stood out among the crowd for a variety of reasons — below is what leadership shared about him and why he was chosen for this honor.
Over the past year, Derek has consistently demonstrated an exceptional commitment to both our community and the BIZ. His willingness to serve, strong work ethic, and positive attitude truly set him apart. During this time, Derek has successfully grown through several roles — from Ambassador, to Special Projects Team Member, and most recently to Team Leader — excelling at each step along the way.
Derek approaches every assignment with determination and pride, working tirelessly to ensure tasks are completed thoroughly and correctly. He leads by example and embraces a side-by-side leadership style, earning the respect and trust of those around him. His ability to motivate others while remaining hands-on reflects the very best of our organizational values.
Derek embodies the spirit of One Band, One Sound, and for these reasons, he is a deserving recipient of the 2025 Ambassador of the Year recognition.
