My name is Chelsea Salame, and I’ve been a proud Detroiter for over 13 years, choosing to live, work, and play in the heart of Downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods. Throughout the years, I’ve witnessed incredible changes in the city, but there are a few spots that have remained staples in my routine—places that continue to shape my experience and love for Detroit.
- Dive Bar: Vollmer’s – A true hidden gem. Revamped by the owners of The Bronx and Queens, it’s the go-to spot for cheap drinks, great food, and an unbeatable low-brow atmosphere.
- Restaurant: Olin Bar and Kitchen – Woman-owned with an incredible seasonal and scratch-made menu. Every dish feels thoughtfully crafted and absolutely delicious.
- Cocktail Lounge: The Skip – The best place for expertly crafted cocktails made with the freshest ingredients. A perfect spot for an after-work drink or a weekend with friends.
- Coffee Shop: SPKR BOX – A cozy, art deco-inspired café with an amazing music selection and top-tier coffee. It’s an ideal spot to work, meet friends, or just enjoy the ambiance.
- Lunch Spot: Que Deli – A true hidden gem serving up New York-style deli classics. Their matzo ball soup is one of the best in town—fresh, flavorful, and comforting.
- Retailer: Bon Bon Bon – My go-to for unique, handcrafted chocolates. Whether as a treat for myself or a thoughtful gift, Bon Bon Bon never disappoints. Plus, their packaging is so cute and eye-catching.
- Outdoors: Capitol Park – A vibrant urban oasis in the heart of downtown. Whether it’s enjoying a coffee on a bench, dog watching, or just soaking in the atmosphere, it’s one of my favorite spots to unwind and take in the city. Although it’s undergoing renovations, it’s scheduled to reopen just in time for the summer.
