After more than four decades of working as a law enforcement and security professional in the public and private sectors, safety measures have become like second nature. As we’re heading into the bustling holiday season, I want to share a few tips that can help you and your loved ones stay vigilant wherever you are headed. These tips are most helpful in large crowds, shopping areas, and any major city in the world – including Downtown Detroit.
The DDP is proud to work in collaboration with public and private safety agencies to help protect the Downtown. On a local front, Detroit’s crime rate is the lowest it has been in more than 50 years, as shared by the City of Detroit. Check out additional stats that were recently shared at DDP’s Faith & Blue Breakfast.
General Safety Tips:
- Walk in well-lit, regularly traveled pathways especially at night.
- Stay alert — avoid distractions like wearing headphones or talking on the phone.
- Try to park your vehicle in attended parking lots or parking structures. Store packages in the trunk or under the seat.
- Make sure your money is safely secured at all times and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
- Carry your purse close to, or across your body, not dangling by the straps.
- Place your wallet in your front pocket.
- If you can, create a buddy system for walking to parking lots or public transportation after hours.
- If your children are joining while shopping, teach them to go to a police officer or security if they get separated or get lost.
- Call 9-1-1, if you feel that you are in danger, need emergency assistance or if you witness a crime.
- Cross busy streets at the crosswalk and wait for the signal that it is safe to cross.
- Remember if you See Something, Say Something!
By implementing the above referenced tips, these are basic ways to show that you are aware of your surroundings.
