Threads and Legs: A Truly Detroit Shopping Experience

Share this:

Threads and Legs offers a truly Detroit shopping experience. Located in the First National Building, the unique and inexpensive boutique opened eight years ago by owner and creative powerhouse Pam Washington.

Pam said she remembers loving to shop at the iconic Winkelman’s when she was growing up. She enjoyed the merchandise and the shopping experience each store was able to provide. And she envisions Winkelman’s as she works to recreate its cozy and welcoming environment at Threads and Legs. And aside from the steady stream of shoppers at Threads and Legs, she is happy to see those who simply look in to say “hello” or stop by for a chat. Pam appears to have hit her mark!

When you step into the store, it is like a visit to the closet of your favorite Aunt who will let you try on anything you want. Inventory stays fresh every month and is full of versatile pieces — from casual to office wear, and items in every size, shape, and form, including an unmatched supply of hosiery in sizes up to 5X!

When Pam retired from AT&T she thought she was ready for a rest, but quickly Downtown Detroit inspired her to start a business. Threads and Legs originally opened at a different Downtown Detroit location, then moved to First National five years ago and it is where she has cultivated a loyal customer base who have stayed with her amidst the pandemic and the long months of the shutdown. Pam said, “those who started with me have stayed with me.” Her attention to the needs of her customers (many of whom have her phone number on speed dial) and her ability to adapt to the many levels of Downtown shoppers have contributed to her success. While she might make it look easy, it is very hard work that demands a 24-hour commitment.

Despite the difficulties that the last year presented, Pam said she was able to grow Threads and Legs by developing a website that sustained the business during the shutdown. Using discount promotions and text alerts, the website and business grew. The website was developed by her daughter Danielle who is an attorney and the mother of her only employee – her 8-year-old grandson. He has been known to approach customers and encourage them to visit his “Nana’s” store. She also mentioned how helpful Bedrock has been to her business since the start of the pandemic.

As to the future of Threads and Legs, Pam has not ruled out expansion but has no plans to leave Downtown Detroit any time soon!

Threads and Legs is located at 660 Woodward Avenue, Suite 15 Detroit, MI 48226
