I-75 Cap Visioning Session #2

The second I-75 Cap Visioning Session took place on Tuesday, August 26, at MSU Detroit Center. The was a continuation of the process of engaging with the community and requesting feedback to help shape a plan to cap a section of I-75 to join Downtown and Midtown. The meeting was co-led by Downtown Detroit Partnership in collaboration with City of Detroit and Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).

Over 6,000 notices were sent out to area residents and the program was cross promoted by community partners, in the media, and via social media, to inform as many people as possible about the opportunity to share public perspectives and have a voice in the process. The program began by reviewing the results of the first Visioning Session, which took place in July. A draft of the project vision statement was presented, and attendees were given the opportunity to provide feedback and ask questions.

Attendees were then asked to design their vision of the future of I-75. Each attendee received a map of the I-75 Cap study area and were provided colored stickers that represented program components such as fitness stations, youth play structures, seating, art, bike paths, natural landscapes, and more. A moderator was assigned to each table to assist in the creative process and help guide conversations about what is important to community members.

At the end of the creative session, moderators presented the key points from each table.

Attendees were also asked to fill out a survey requesting demographic information and feedback on the I-75 vision statement draft. Community members who were unable to attend are encouraged to participate in the survey where they will be able to design the I-75 Cap. Here’s your chance to share your creative input on what YOU think the I-75 Cap should look like. The sky is the limit. Dream big:  Design the Cap.

The key takeaway from the meeting was the importance of community engagement and the commitment to representing the public’s priorities into the future of the I-75 Cap.

The next meeting will take place in October where the project team will showcase the preferred alternative based on community feedback from the first two visioning sessions.
