Downtown Detroit is about to get even better! Thanks to an $800,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP) is set to enhance accessibility, inclusivity, and design across several key parks and public spaces. This exciting investment will improve the heart of Downtown Detroit, making it more welcoming and engaging for residents, workers, and visitors alike.
Investing in a More Inclusive and Vibrant Downtown
The grant will support a range of improvements in well-loved public spaces like Campus Martius Park, Grand Circus Park, Capitol Park, and more. The goal? To create a Downtown that is accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of ability or background. By investing in infrastructure upgrades, expanding services, and introducing innovative design elements, DDP is committed to transforming Downtown Detroit into a thriving, inclusive hub.
DDP CEO Eric B. Larson emphasizes the broader impact of these enhancements, stating, “DDP is honored to partner with Knight Foundation to realize a more inclusive, vibrant, and dynamic Downtown Detroit. This investment marks a pivotal step toward the long-term transformation of the city’s core into a destination where people can live, work, and play.”
By making public spaces more engaging, the initiative will attract more residents and visitors, boosting local businesses and enhancing Detroit’s overall urban experience.
Year-Round Enjoyment for All
The improvements funded by the Knight Foundation will enhance the year-round experience in Downtown Detroit’s parks. Whether it’s wintertime ice skating at Campus Martius Park or warm-weather gatherings in Capitol Park, these updates will ensure public spaces remain dynamic and welcoming throughout the seasons.
LaTrice McClendon, Detroit Program Director at Knight Foundation, underscores the importance of this investment: “At Knight Foundation, we believe that vibrant public spaces are essential to fostering community engagement and economic vitality. This investment aims to ensure that Downtown Detroit’s parks are accessible and welcoming to all, reflecting the rich diversity of our city.”
Exciting Projects on the Horizon
Several major projects will benefit from this funding:
- Capitol Park Revitalization – Enhancements are already underway to make this historic space more inviting.

A Commitment to Long-Term Growth
The DDP manages and stewards 18 Downtown parks and public spaces, ensuring they continue to thrive through sustainable funding and thoughtful design. By strengthening Detroit’s urban core, this initiative aligns with DDP’s mission to make the city a premier place to live, work, and visit.
