City Market: Generations of Hospitality

Have you ever craved caviar at midnight and wondered where you could buy it in Downtown Detroit? Only at City Market located at Brush Street at Congress From gourmet prepared foods to a host of wines for every budget, this is the place to find something to satisfy any food or wine connoisseur!

In 1987, Andrew Kado, quite the local legend, purchased the business in his continued commitment to Downtown Detroit and investment in this city. As the owner of several Downtown businesses, Andrew welcomed this opportunity to provide more than the traditional grocery/market offering to the growing residential community Downtown. Andrew’s love for Detroit was shared and passed down to both his children and grandchildren. Today, City Market is managed by the second-generation Paul and Jason, both Wayne State University graduates.

After renovations in 2014, City Market began offering prepared food, starting with sandwiches, and has expanded to meal options curated by many local chefs. I must admit, it is worth the visit, if only for the meatloaf!

City Market aims to source goods from local merchants. The Kados say these relationships are invaluable and that was proven during the shutdown. Many vendors stayed loyal to City Market. The entire team was able to meet sales commitments. The Kados also credit City Market’s success to family and employees who have been with them between three and 20 years for allowing the market to stay open during their regular hours throughout the pandemic.

As the holidays approach, City Market is focused on stocking the shelves with seasonal favorites like party trays. The Kado family is also keeping its tradition of giving back to the community through donations to local organizations like the Pope Francis Center, Capuchin Soup Kitchen, and Saints Peter and Paul Church.

Paul says that always seeing his parents work hard and giving the best service possible to every one of their customers is now being passed on to the next generation. Paul’s and Jason’s sons now help in the store. They explained that, despite the very long days they work, each customer is always greeted and treated like family.

Show your support for the entire City Market family and purchase a Spirit Card then stop in to see the Kado family!

City Market is located at 575 Brush Street Detroit, MI 48226
