Overview

Two-year initiative launched June 8, 2006

Budget:  $2.8 million plus significant in-kind contributions

Employs 60 Goodwill Industries workers (a total of 135 individ-uals employed since start-up)

Work Shifts:
6am-11pm Monday - Friday
7:30am-11:30pm Sat./Sun.

Special Events Coverage:
(North American International Auto Show, Detroit's Winter Blast, Target Fireworks, GM River Days, Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, Detroit International Jazz-Fest, professional sporting events)


Objectives

Litter removal

Graffiti/poster/sticker removal

Sidewalk power sweeping

Sidewalk steam cleaning

Alley/gutter/doorway cleaning

Daily cleaning of 72 bus shelters

Maintenance of 27 wayfinding kiosks

Weed abatement


Coverage Area

Sidewalks, public spaces inside the downtown freeway system: Lodge to the west, I-375 to the east, I-75 to the north, Jefferson Ave. and the Detroit River to the south.

Freeway entrance and exit ramps.

The program has now ex-panded (via contract) to include maintenance of the new Detroit RiverWalk and portions of the Midtown area.  Clean Downtown crews were also instrumental in helping to clean and restore landscaping on Belle Isle for the 2007 Grand Prix.

7 days/week
360 days/year

Trash Removed:
Downtown: 220 tons 
Riverfront: 35 tons 
Belle Isle: 5 tons
GM River Days: 50 tons

Sidewalk Cleaning:
39 miles of downtown sidewalks steam cleaned 3times and power-swept 18 times
